Don “D.Guy” Johnson is the Executive Director of Lutheran Outdoor Ministries (LOM). Lutheran Outdoor Ministries is an association of outdoor ministry organizations, professionals, board members, businesses, and students connected to Lutheran camping, conferences, and retreats. Their programs reach God’s children of all ages though summer camping programs, retreat opportunities, hospitality, team building activities, and partnership with congregations. Their sites are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America which states that “…outdoor ministries strive to strengthen, support and lift up the body of Christ through building relationships with others and with God while enjoying creation.” LOM is a vibrant and diverse community, committed to deepening faith – in rustic cabins and in state-of-the-art retreat centers, on mountaintops, on city streets, on ocean shores.
D.Guy has had a fantastic career he served for 35 years as Executive Director of Calumet Lutheran Camp and Conference Center, West Ossipee, NH, and the President and CEO of Lutheran Outdoor Ministries of New England. Under Johnson’s leadership, Calumet grew over the years from a summer camp for children into a thriving, year-round center involving 15,000 persons of all ages each year.
After Calumet Johnson directed Project Connect of the Eastern Cluster of Lutheran Seminaries, for seven years. He assisted more than 1,000 young people to explore the possibility of seminary education.
D.Guy talks with the 2 Bald Pastors about lessons he has learned in ministry, how churches can take advantage of the energy young people come back with after going to camp and the future of outdoor ministry. Enjoy!
